New 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country Luxury Car Review

2023 Volvo V60 For car buyers who want something bigger than a small hatchback but don’t want to park their SUV in the garage, the 2023 Volvo V60 and V60 Cross Country are a rare pair of compact station wagons that can meet that need.

We love carts; they ride lower to the ground, often weigh less than similar-sized SUVs, and tend to handle better — so they’re more fun to drive. If you think of popping a dowdy image at the mention of the word “w”, know that the V60 model is anything but boring.

Upscale exterior styling gives way to luxurious interiors with adequate technological features. Fans of driving with different wagon tendencies will drool at the sleekest Polestar Engineered model and its powerful 455-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain, but the base engine in the V60 Cross Country will likely be more than enough for everyone.

If you need more space for cargo, the V90 Cross Country offers a similar luxo-wagon vibe—and luxury station wagons from other manufacturers, such as the Audi A4 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-class All-Terrain, are also worth a look.

The V60 and V60 Cross Country station wagons both received a mild styling refresh for 2023 that included new wheels and reworked front and rear bumpers. Volvo’s new Google-based infotainment system has been added as well, which includes an updated interface to the car’s digital gauge display and a central vertically oriented touchscreen.

2023 Volvo V60 Review

The Volvo V60 2023 is available in two different configurations both of which offer drivers a lot, whether they’re gearheads or people just needing a new vehicle. The Volvo V60 is a hatchback, one of those classic cars with timeless style.

2023 Volvo V60

The Volvo V60 Cross Country 2023 features a raised suspension system and SUV-like cargo-carrying capabilities. The 2023 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered model trades off-road capability for performance orientation and a great hybrid powertrain that will really help you save at the pump.

Volvo Cars puts safety first. Both versions of the 2023 Volvo V60 will include many standard safety features to keep you safe on the road, including:

The Volvo V60 2023 is a bold new vehicle that can conquer roads and trails. It brings hatchback style to a new era, allowing you to carry lots of people and cargo without sacrificing maneuverability and speed. The T8 powertrain offers tremendous savings on the pump side, a true relief during these high-priced times.

2023 Volvo V60 Redesign

The Volvo V60 Cross Country and Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered vehicles have both been updated for the 2023 model year.

Each has new wheels and bumpers. However, the most interesting addition to the Volvo V60 2023 facelift is the new Volvo infotainment system. It leverages Google technology to let you control your music, navigation and more with just your voice.

If you choose to opt into the full spectrum of connectivity offered by Google and Volvo Cars, then you’ll be able to control the cabin temperature, your shopping list and even any smart lights in your home with your voice from the front seat of your car. The future is now.

Volvo V60 Updates

The Volvo S60 sedan and V60 wagon have been updated for the 2023 model year, their mid-life refresh. We don’t know the specifics of how our US market model will be updated, a Volvo spokesperson told Car and Driver that information coming this spring.

However, we can look to Europe for wide sweeps, and it seems we don’t need to look too long or too hard. The S60 sedan remains unchanged up front, while the V60 gets a revised lower front fascia with slightly wider intakes accented with chrome trim bars, and a slightly higher center intake than the current model.

In the back, both cars hide their exhausts. There will be at least one new wheel option as well, the six-spoke cribbing work of the aero rims designed for the XC40 Recharge. And that’s all we can say about it.

Inside, Google’s Android Automotive infotainment software continues its spread across the Volvo lineup, bringing the same functionality to the 9-inch screen we’ve sampled in several other Swedish offerings so far.

We only get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the United States, aided by a 48-volt mild hybrid (update for 2022) or plug-in-hybrid electric assist depending on the trim for the S60, while the V60 wagon — not the raised V60 Cross Country — only sold as Recharge Polestar Engineered in the United States. Don’t expect any deviations on the ICE side, but the PHEV trim benefits from a bigger battery and a more powerful motor.

2023 Volvo V60 Specs

The two different versions of the 2023 Volvo V60 have different powertrains. The Volvo V60 Cross Country uses the Volvo T5 powertrain, which consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower. It’s mated to the all-wheel drive and jumps from 0 to 60 in less than six and a half seconds.

The Volvo V60 Recharge 2023, also called the Polestar Engineered model, uses the company’s T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain.

It pairs a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a battery system and a motor for 455 horsepower. You’ll be sliding down the road in this version of the Volvo V60, jumping from 0 to 60 in under five seconds.

The 2023 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered model features all-wheel drive and adjustable suspension. The latter feature allows driving enthusiasts to customize the precise handling of their new vehicle, making for a truly engaging experience.

This is not to say that the Volvo V60 Cross Country doesn’t offer an enjoyable ride – it’s meant to get you out of the way, making it a great car camping vehicle. Whether you prefer cruising on the road or outside, there’s a 2023 Volvo V60 for you.

If you’re ready to drive a new Volvo vehicle, then it’s time to take a look at our new Volvo V60 wagon for sale. We offer competitive financing and great service – schedule your test drive today.

Volvo V60 2023 Models

The Volvo V60 is a dynamic real estate 5-door, 5-seat enterprise. It builds on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), Volvo’s advanced modular product platform that underpins all Volvos in the 90 and 60 Series.

2023 Volvo V60

Underlining Volvo’s position as an automaker that combines good looks with everyday practicality, the V60 highlights the company’s pedigree in the family estate that caters to the diverse needs and realities of modern family life.

Like its siblings, the XC60 and S60, the V60 carries the proud and confident face of Volvo’s design language, along with classic Volvo styling cues. New features include a front bumper design, an emblem that integrates a front-facing radar, a dark theme grille design, rear bumper inserts, and recessed end pipes, along with several new exterior colors and wheels.

Inside, the V60 has taken its cues from the clean Scandinavian interior design first introduced on the 90 Series cars, raising the bar in this segment with natural materials and exclusive details on the dashboard and instrument panel.

Options include luxurious leatherless interiors and handcrafted gearshifts in genuine Swedish crystal custom-made for Volvo Cars by Orrefors.

The exclusive new Tailored Wool Blend upholstery, available in the Recharge model, is made of 30 percent responsibly produced wool and 70 percent polyester with contrast white piping, created to optimize the experience of contemporary and sustainable luxury.

An advanced air purification system prevents up to 95 percent of harmful PM 2.5 particles from entering the cab. Whatever the conditions outside, this solution can help passengers enjoy better and healthier air quality, while also being able to monitor particle and pollen levels outside the car.

2023 Volvo V60 Interior

Volvo designed some great interiors, and the V60 is no exception, largely imitating the S60 sedan and XC60 SUV. The cabin is spacious, the seats are comfortable, and the design is unquestionably upscale. But Volvo’s minimalist approach means that a lot of the controls are hidden within the infotainment system.

Like other vintage Volvos, the cabin looks and feels more expensive than the original, which makes it even more impressive. The cargo capacity is also large, something we expect from a station wagon.

In our tests, we put eight carry-on luggage behind the rear seats and a total of 22 pieces of luggage with the seats folded. For reference, the Audi A4 Allroad carried two fewer pieces of luggage in both tests.

The V60 and V60 Cross Country come standard with the Google-based Volvo infotainment system. The new interface runs on the same vertically oriented 9.0-inch touchscreen as the old Sensus Connect system but operates faster and smoother.

New, but not perfect; The interface displays icons on the screen that are too small to be easy to use while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is Bluetooth connectivity and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot supported by a 4G LTE data connection.

Volvo V60 2023 Infotainment

The Volvo V60 is equipped with an infotainment system co-developed with Google featuring built-in Google apps and services.

Intuitive and convenient, this next-generation infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalization and unmatched connectivity, further enhanced through the Digital Services package.

At the heart of the Digital Services plan is access to Google apps and services*, which offer hands-free assistance with the Google Assistant, best-in-class navigation via Google Maps, and a broad offering of native in-car apps via Google Play.

During the 2023 model year, the V60 will be enabled to receive larger software and operating system updates over the air.

Volvo V60 Powertrain

The V60 Recharge is powered by our latest generation plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers 350 (T6) or 455hp (T8). It features an 18.8kWh battery pack that expands the possibilities of pure electricity.

Powered by a 107kW motor, the V60 Recharge T6 and T8 provide a pure electric range of up to 91km** (WLTP Combined) – an upgrade that will allow more drivers to meet their daily driving needs with electricity.

With One Pedal Drive in the Recharge version, the driver can use the accelerator for both acceleration and braking of the car: press for acceleration and lift the pedal for smooth braking until it stops.

The V60 is also available with various 48 Volt mild hybrid variants on petrol and diesel engines. The lightweight hybrid offers a smooth takeoff and up to 15 percent fuel savings and reduced emissions in real-world driving.

Volvo V60 Engine

The Cross Country model is powered by a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is equipped with all-wheel drive. When we tested the T5’s powertrain, we found it to be a solid performance, with a 60-mph time of 6.4 seconds. As long as you don’t push too hard, the V60 feels agile and responsive when cornering.

Polestar’s enhanced Recharge T8 comes with a 455-hp plug-in-hybrid powertrain that pairs a turbo and supercharged four-cylinder with an electric motor and all-wheel drive. This setup is much faster than the T5 model, jumping to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

The Recharge T8 Polestar also features a manually adjustable suspension—something that driving enthusiasts might find cool—so owners can customize the car’s driving behavior to their liking.

2023 Volvo V60 MPG

The Cross Country model received a city rating of 22 mpg, 31 highway, and 25 combined. Despite being the lineup’s performance-oriented model, the Polestar’s V60 Recharge T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain is quite efficient, delivering a fuel economy rating of 74 MPGe, with a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 41 miles.

2023 Volvo V60

We haven’t had a chance to test the V60 on our 75 mph highway fuel economy test route yet, but we’ll update this story with details when we do. For more information on V60 fuel economy, visit the EPA website.

2023 Volvo V60 Price

We like the more racing Recharge T8 Polestar, which ignores the raised Cross Country suspension and SUV-style cues for a more performance-oriented look.

The ride is on the stiff side, but that’s the compromise we wanted to make for the T8’s extra powertrain and electric-only driving mode. If the Polestar look isn’t for you, we won’t judge you for choosing Cross Country. Honestly, both are good choices.

2023 Volvo V60 Release Date
