2024 BMW M3, The M5 CS debuted last year as “the fastest and most powerful production BMW car ever,” and it will get a smaller sibling in the form of the M3 CS.

Recently spied on testing in and around the Nürburgring, the model will essentially be a four-door version of the M4 CSL.

The resemblance is impossible to ignore as the spy photographer shoots the two models parked next to each other. As you can see, each features a revised grid that trades horizontal bars for bone-like structures.

That’s not the only change as the model has a prominent front splitter with canards.

Further back, we can see a carbon fiber roof, aerodynamic mirrors, and lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The latter is supported by a high-performance braking system with bronze calipers.

Other highlights include a new rear spoiler and a carbon fiber diffuser.

While the rear side windows are camouflaged, the M3 CS likely won’t follow in the M4 CSL’s footsteps by eliminating the rear seats. However, the company might offer two individual rear seats as they did on the M5 CS.

According to the same source, it will be one of the first models from BMW to boast custom M headlights as standard. It won’t go through the Draconian CSL diet, but the hardcore sedan is said to be getting plenty of carbon fiber to shave off the fat.

While not mentioned in the report, the M3 CS should be based on the facelifted Series 3 that debuted this year.

The reason we’re bringing this up isn’t because of the styling changes, but rather because of the implementation of the iDrive 8 infotainment system. It will be the same story as the M3 Touring and M4 CSL, plus the unconfirmed M4 GT/H.

If you’re not familiar with the reports surrounding the M4 GT/H, it’s said to be a handcrafted car as it will be sold outside the United States.

The letter “H” appears to stand for the manual gearbox’s H pattern and the car is said to be based mostly on the CSL, meaning no rear seats. In fact, the electric adjustment for the front seats will be removed, as will the parking sensors to cut weight even further.

All things considered, BMW has a busy schedule ahead for its upcoming M3/M4 lineup with LCI. There will be another extension to the lineup with the launch of this year’s i3 Sedan which will be built in China for the local market.

It will be based on the long wheelbase version and will keep the “i3” moniker alive after the hatchback’s discontinuation in July.

The story of the M3 begins with four cylinders. The next generation was upgraded to six, a formula that carried over to the E46. For the E90, the Bavarian automaker perfected it with a high-speed V8 that produces peak hp at 8,300 rpm despite having a cross-plane crankshaft.

Due to increasingly stringent emission regulations, the F80 switched back to six cylinders. Aided by some turbos, this bump is understandably more powerful.

The recipe carried over to the G80, which also switched from an optional dual-clutch transmission to an automatic torque converter.

BMW’s go-faster division further sweetens the deal with the M xDrive, which can be switched to rear-drive mode on the fly. The German automaker expects 50 percent of its global sales to be electric vehicles by 2030, and in some markets that include the UK and the European Union, the company will not be able to sell combustion-engined vehicles after 2035.

Given these circumstances, BMW M boss Frank van Meel suggested that something obvious would happen to the M3. “Maybe it will be electric – but if it is, it will always be the M3. Whatever the powertrain, you should always be able to drive our cars and know they are M cars.

We just spoke to customers and the feedback is that 90-95% doesn’t matter which way we take the powertrain,” he told British automotive magazine Autocar.

The G20 generation 3 Series, and implicitly the M3, will be discontinued in 2025 or thereabouts. It remains to be seen if the Series 3 and the next M3 will maintain their internal combustion with some sort of electrical assistance to keep CO2 emissions low, but it is certain that the next one after that will use electricity.

The first electric-assisted BMW M comes in the guise of the XM, rocking the plug-in V8 hybrid powertrain.

A variation of this high-performance setting will be used by the next-generation M5. Also worth noting, rumors have it that the M5 Touring is reportedly coming in 2024.

2024 BMW M3 Facelift

This generation of BMW M3 and M4 will never get a major facelift. Sure, they will get some technical updates with the midcycle LCI but visually they are meant to remain unchanged.

However, BMW might actually decide to give them a facelift, as these M cars will be here for a while and BMW wants them to stay fresh.

The reason for BMW’s decision to give the M3 and M4 more visual updates is that these 3 Series and 4 Series generations will last a little longer than usual. This means the M3 and M4 should last longer too. The M4 will outlast the M3 by a year or so.

There’s currently no word on exactly when such a facelift will happen but don’t expect it until after 2024. BMW will need a visual update to keep its cars fresh until 2027-2028, so it won’t take three-four years. from stagnation.
