2024 BMW X4

2024 BMW X4 did pretty well with the X4 in terms of sales globally and that shouldn’t come as a surprise. They broke the mold with the X6 at first, so it made perfect sense for them to give the X3 its smaller coupe-like sibling and call it a day.

The first-generation X4 (F26) was unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show as a sportier-looking alternative to the previously mentioned X3. Let’s face it, not everyone needs a crossover for purely practical reasons. Most do, but not all.

I’m not a fan of half-measures when it comes to the car segment and premium compact crossovers have always been that way. Note that I’m using the word ‘premium’ here. Let me explain.

If you buy, say, a Toyota RAV4, it’s an excellent buy, one that will meet your every need as long as you don’t have a large family or lots of tools to carry around. Plus, it’s a budget-friendly SUV, like all of its competitors.

However, premium SUVs, even in compact form, are still quite expensive, and if you allow yourself to tick too many extra boxes on the specs sheet, you can easily take the X3 or X4 close to the X5 or X6 in price terms.

To me, that doesn’t make any sense, because, at that point, you’d better go for the flagship product – excel at everything.

Anyway, moving on to the second generation X4 (G02), which came out in 2018, which means it’s only a year or two away from being replaced by the all-new model, which will be based on the all-new model 2024 X3.

The latter has already been seen out and about in prototype form, so it’s only a matter of time before someone takes a hard look at the pictures, before putting pen to paper on what the all-new third-generation X4 will look like.

These renderings are from Bernhard Reichel and as you can see, we are dealing with the X4 M Competition flagship variant. I’ll say this much: it’s not bad. And thankfully the grille doesn’t look too flashy.

The 2024 BMW X4 Spied

Our spy photographer captured a camouflaged next-generation BMW X4 prototype, effectively debunking rumors of swapping out the model in favor of the EV-only iX4.

This will be the third iteration of the X4 coupe SUV, sharing the foundation, interior, and most of the bodywork with the upcoming fourth-generation X3 SUV.

BMW X4 Prototype

The prototype appears to sport a production headlight unit, with a shape and LED graphics that look very similar to the smaller BMW X1.

We can also see a large kidney grille, and lower intake bumper following the same split design pattern, as on the BMW X3 prototype. However, the X4 reveals a distinct X-shaped pattern for the grille, which may be model specific.

The nature of the ICE-powered prototype is evident from the large opening at the front, and a visible portion of the exhaust system under the rear overhang.

This leads us to believe that the new X4 will be available in a mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric (iX4) variants, continuing BMW’s strategy of offering choice to its customer base. After all, with so many components shared with the X3, the R&D costs for the new X4 aren’t that high.

2024 BMW X4 Redesign

While the X3 and X4 have traditionally shared most of their body panels, BMW designers wanted to differentiate the two models even more for the next generation.

2024 BMW X4The X4 appears to have more rounded wheel arches than the X3 prototype, resulting in a more aggressive stance. Predictably, the X4 also gets a completely redesigned tail, for the full coupe-SUV treatment.

The roofline is more sloping with a fastback rear glass and integrated ducktail spoiler. The entire roof structure seems typical for the X4, even the front side windows look narrower than those on the X3.

This design will likely shave a few inches from headroom and a few cubic feet from the X4’s trunk space, but not enough to pose a practical problem. After all, coupe-SUV buyers prioritize style with more than enough space in the medium and large segments.

The next-generation BMW X4 will likely debut alongside its X3 sibling in 2024, three years after the launch of the current facelifted model.

Judging from the rest of the BMW members, we expect to see more prototypes undercover throughout the following year, revealing more details about the final production model.

The BMW X4’s main rivals are the upcoming new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and the Audi Q5 Sportback.
