2024 Jeep Gladiator: New Jeep Gladiator Open-Air Pickup Truck Review

2024 Jeep Gladiator is a vehicle model that’s only been on the market for three years Jeep engineers have done a lot under the JL series Wrangler bodywork.

There’s a refresh for the 2021 model year and upgraded tech options 392 powered by a tired Willys Xtreme Recon V8 and a 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain.

We’ve read about more than one Gladiator buyer hoping the Wrangler’s 4xe powertrain would be fitted to a pickup this year or next but reportedly not. Mopar Insiders credits sources inside Stellantis for the news that there won’t be a Gladiator 4xe on sale in the US until the 2024 model year.

Supposedly product planners had prioritized the Wrangler’s anticipated mid-cycle update for the 2023 model year.

The Gladiator got a turn for minor changes the following year the load-lugger is said to have adopted the changes made to the Wrangler and added the rather popular PHEV drivetrain that served the Wrangler and 2022 Grand Cherokee.

At the heart of the propulsion system is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine assisted by a 17 kWh battery that works with two electric motors.

Total system output stands at 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet but it’s possible those numbers will change after a refresh.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Review

2024 Jeep Gladiator has announced it will build an electrified version of the Gladiator truck. The automaker was initially coy about denying the initial rumors but eventually confirmed the news when a prototype was spotted in June.

But it looks like we can wait a while as electric trucks aren’t expected until the 2024 model year.

We’re not sure what the new truck will look like though Motor1 speculates that the electrified Gladiator will have some of the features of the redesigned 2023 Wrangler. Since even the 2023 Wrangler isn’t out yet we’ll just have to wait and see.

Jeep hasn’t mentioned if the truck will be an EV or some sort of hybrid but if the Gladiator 2024 takes over the Wrangler it could also include its powertrain.

The current Wrangler is equipped with two electric motors and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic gearbox.

That makes 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Whether this exact powertrain will remain in the upcoming Wrangler or if Jeep will fix it we’re not sure.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Report

Jeep kicked off a plug-in hybrid makeover with the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe. In the United States, the Wrangler 4xe goes on sale for the 2021 model year with an EPA-rated electric driving range of 22 miles (35 kilometers).

After the launch of the Grand Cherokee 4xe utility vehicle, almost everyone was looking forward to the Gladiator 4xe.

The fuel suction truck was confirmed in January 2021 by global president Christian Meunier. Just months later, a teaser image was uploaded by a 4×4 specialist on social media, then deleted.

As for the latest update to the Gladiator 4xe, sources allegedly close to Jeep suggest that it will launch in 2023 for the 2024 model year when the midsize pickup is expected to receive a refresh.

Speaking to Mopar Insiders, the source “confirmed that the Gladiator 4xe will be powered by the same PHEV system” as the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe.

While it’s a reasonable assumption to wait until a mid-cycle redesign, Jeep may be aware that delaying the Gladiator 4xe will cost customers who will switch to competing automakers.

On the other hand, Jeep also knows that no one intends to launch a plug-in hybrid truck in 2022 for the 2023 model year, which is why rescheduling can’t be done.

Whatever the future of the Gladiator 4xe, we have to remember that Jeep’s goals are a little higher than plug-in hybrids. Under the tagline “zero-emission freedom”, the brand plans to launch a full-electric Wrangler based on the Magneto Concept introduced at the Easter Jeep Safari in April.

Stellantis, the multinational that merged Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with Groupe PSA, will spend €30 billion ($35 billion) on BEVs and software. During Stellantis EV Day, the Jeep brand promised BEV offerings in every segment by the calendar year 2025.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Hybrid

The Jeep Gladiator 4xe Plug-In Hybrid confirmed earlier this year that there would be an electrified version of the Gladiator truck.

Jeep hasn’t put a deadline on the plug-in hybrid although the company has ambitious plans to offer electrification options across its portfolio including pickups.

We don’t know when it will debut. But maybe not in the near future. A new Mopar Insiders report says the Gladiator 4xe won’t arrive until the model year 2024.

According to the publication citing anonymous sources inside Stellantis, the electric truck will arrive after Jeep gave the Wrangler JL a mid-cycle refresh that will arrive for the 2023 model year.

We’ll see the redesigned Wrangler debut sometime next year and that design update will translate into a redesigned Gladiator that will arrive in 2024. The facelift will include the Wrangler Unlimited hybrid powertrain that also powers the Grand Cherokee 4xe.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Powertrain

The 2024 Jeep Gladiator features a current 4xe powertrain pairing two electric motors to a turbocharged four-cylinder and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic gearbox producing 375 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and 470 pound-feet (637 Newton-meters) of torque.

2024 Jeep Gladiator

The 2024 Jeep Gladiator could tweak the powertrain for a refresher extracting more power and efficiency from the setup although we’ll have to wait for the debut to see if that happens.

It’s also unclear what kind of design changes the Wrangler will receive even though it has a new Bronco to compete with today.

Jeep initially denied that they were developing an electric Gladiator even though it didn’t last long. In June it seemed the low-key Jeep teased the electric Gladiator with eagle eye fans picking out lots of small details that suggested the model was an electrified Jeep truck.

It looks like such a model will be arriving soon although recent reports paint a different picture and it looks like we could wait over a year for the hybrid truck debut.

Don’t say that competition has no effect on decision-making. Having to compete with rivals head-to-head for the first time in recent memory, the Wrangler has received constant attention since its major redesign just a few years ago.

The new trim package and fresh stocky off-road options (37-inch factory chops, anyone?) are just two examples of how Jeep does a bang-up job of keeping its brand face fresh and top-of-mind.

But that attention might distract from the work of his close cousin, the Gladiator pickup truck.

According to rumors that first surfaced on an outlet called Mopar Insiders, moving the popular Wrangler electric-powered 4xe powertrain to the Gladiator may take longer than expected.

If reports are accurate, and the Mopar Insiders crew seems to have consistently reliable sources in Auburn Hills, we won’t see the Gladiator 4xe until 2024, one model year after the mid-cycle refresh of the venerable Wrangler.

Why? It makes sense to blame (or thank) the Broncos. While no one expected major changes to the Wrangler, one can rest assured it will receive more than a few tech and feature upgrades to keep up with the Blue Oval bruiser.

If you’ve ridden a Sasquatch-equipped Bronco, especially the Badlands trim with Trail Turn Assist and electronic disconnect sway bars, then you can understand why Jeep needed a Wrangler to keep up, and it seems they might be willing to push out another project a bit to achieve certain goals.

Several models in the Jeep lineup are already spreading electrons in their powertrains, including the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The company suit has stated a goal of having a fully electrified portfolio by 2025 pushing the Gladiator 4xe a year will still achieve that goal.

While it’s usually a (relatively) easy task to fit these gubbins into the Gladiator, it’s not unreasonable for Jeep to focus its attention on its most recognizable make and model dairy cows instead of trimming the niche on slower-selling vehicles.

Currently, the Wrangler 4xe combines a turbocharged 2.0L four-banger engine with two electric motors, all paired to the familiar eight-speed automatic.

This is good for 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, not to mention about 30 kilometers of electric range. Some of those details, especially the power numbers, may change slightly for 2023.

2024 Jeep Gladiator EV

Jeep released the Gladiator, its first pickup truck in years, in the spring of 2019. Now, as various automakers are launching eco-friendly electric trucks, many 4×4 enthusiasts are wondering if we’ll ever get an electric Jeep Gladiator.

It’s actually only a matter of time before we get our hands on the electric Gladiator. But the question is: will it be based on the existing Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, Jeep’s all-electric concept vehicle, or share the technology with other Stellantis vehicles like the new Ram 1500 EV?

Jeep announced plans to offer electrified versions of each of its vehicles by 2025. But the release of the Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid is rumored to be delayed until 2024, so the Gladiator will likely be one of the last Jeep EVs to launch.

The first Gladiator was a 2020 model, but Jeep released it in the spring of 2019. The unique and capable-looking pickup truck immediately became a sensation.

The Gladiator is available in some of the same trims as the Wrangler: Sport, Sport S, Willys and Willys Sport. You can also order the Jeep Gladiator in upscale High Altitude trim. But instead of the Wrangler’s upscale Sahara trim, the most luxurious Gladiator is the Overland.

Two of the Gladiator’s top performance trims are the Rubicon (low-speed rock crawler, similar to the Wrangler) and the Gladiator-only Mojave trim. The Gladiator Mojave is a high-speed desert racer, similar to the Ford F-150 Raptor and Bronco Raptor.

The new Jeep Wrangler top trim is based on a unique powertrain: the Wrangler Rubicon 392 features a 392 cubic-inch (6.4 liters) HEMI V8. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid that’s nearly as powerful as the 392, producing 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

With Gladiator sales doing well, it makes sense that the next Jeep truck will be one or both of these drivetrains.

My colleague Allison Barfield even covered a Jeep teaser image of the Gladiator fitting the 4xe’s signature blue tow hook. Later inside sources revealed that Jeep was pushing the Gladiator 4xe back to 2024.

Jeep has released the electric Wrangler concept SUV. The Jeep Magneto is a two-door Wrangler with a stretched wheelbase, 40-inch tires, and a single electric motor with 850 lb-ft of torque.

Magneto’s newest song is Magneto 2.0. The motor is a dedicated axial flux unit with a red stripe of 5,250 rpm. Therefore, Jeep paired it with a six-speed manual, making the Magneto 2.0 an EV with a very “Jeep” personality.

All Magneto torque is available at zero rpm. What’s more, Jeep lowered its first gear ratio from 5.13 to 3.36, making it one of the most capable rock crawlers.

Stellantis’ first EV truck is on its way: the Ram 1500 EV. Finally, Jeep could also offer a full battery-electric Gladiator as well. Perhaps the two trucks will share some technology, but they will also be very different.

The first images of the Ram 1500 EV show a futuristic truck with advanced technology, such as an independent rear suspension. Sturdy axles, both front, and rear, give the Gladiator a distinct personality.

Someday, these axles might house an electric engine, but it’s unlikely the Gladiator will get the entire Ram 1500 EV drivetrain.

What future Jeep EVs might borrow from the Ram 1500 EV is a gasoline-powered “range extender” or a bed-mounted generator. This will allow long road trips between charging stations.

2024 Jeep Gladiator EPA

The EPA rates the Wrangler 4xe at 49 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) by far the best of the Wrangler group and 21 miles of pure electric driving.

2024 Jeep Gladiator

Jeep says it expects the Grand Cherokee 4xe to return 57 MPGe which is likely because the Grand Cherokee is more aerodynamically friendly than the shoebox Wrangler.

Since the Gladiator weighs about 500 pounds more than the Wrangler while equally, underestimating wind resistance doesn’t be surprising if the Gladiator’s EPA figures are trimmed down compared to its hardcore SUV sibling.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Price

Since that would be at least partially electric it’s reasonable to expect that the price range will increase from the Gladiator’s current MSRP of $39,680

2024 Jeep Gladiator Release Date

As mentioned above we have quite a long time to wait for the electrified Gladiator to come out. Jeep didn’t give us an estimated release date though it’s pretty certain that it won’t debut until after the next Wrangler.

It is likely that the new Jeep Gladiator will come out in mid to late 2023 or early 2024.
