2024 Volvo XC90 there have been rumors about a 2024 Volvo XC90, predicting that the next-generation XC90 might not be what fans like the most – or whether they’ll like the new design.
After rumors circulated for 2 years, the company still hasn’t said anything about their new popular SUV. Many have suggested that Volvo might be ready to launch it once they’re done with the overall interior and styling changes. So, what is the SUV like?
In 2021, Volvo Cars finally confirmed that it would have a completely pure electric variant – another version of the XC90. However, they will produce it under a completely different name. It is said that the company wants to enter a dual platform strategy back in the days of 2021.
According to reports, the company is developing what it calls a (unique) two-story SPA2. One was designed for a hybrid model (which at the time was rumored to be the third generation XC90) and the other for a fully electric type, such as the Tesla Model X or its rival, the Volvo Recharge Concept.

Volvo has been on the cutting edge of electrification and advanced engine technology for many years. The Swedish brand, known for its excellent range of safety equipment, brings something unique to the XC90.
The T8 version of the Volvo XC90 luxury SUV initially used supercharging and turbocharging to ensure a small engine was sufficient for this three-row crossover, but that could soon become obsolete.
The 2022 version of the Volvo XC90 with the most power is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. This version wears the T8 badge, marking it as the most powerful, but the new T8 is different from the original.
Car and Driver tell us that with the Recharge name in the mix, the T8’s engine goes from using turbocharging and supercharging to using only the turbo attached to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
The addition of an electric motor to drive the rear wheels more than makes up for the lack of supercharging in this luxury SUV.
Without giving us a specific timeframe, MotorTrend hinted that the Volvo XC90 might be the next SUV in the lineup to switch to a fully electrified platform. The current generation has been around since 2015, despite the new powertrain layout for 2022. If we have to guess, this new electric SUV could arrive as soon as 2024.
Similar to many other luxury brands, Volvo intends to offer only EVs by 2030. Both the hint at the next generation of the XC90 and the move towards EVs mean the T8’s current layout is likely to be obsolete soon.

2024 Volvo XC90 Platforms
According to Volvo Cars Chief Technology Officer Henrik Green, the company wants to produce floors in parallel on a separate (and distinct) line, but for ICE, the current platform (SPA1) integrates several improvements.
According to Green, a single floor will be built around the battery (flat) along with the e-machine on the back and front. It’s like the skateboarding approach found in today’s (pure) electric vehicles. And then, there will be another floor with a completely different mechanism and construction.
It will be constructed with a support axle, combustion unit (located at the front), fuel tank at the rear, and an exhaust system.
The CEO of Volvo Cars, Hakan Samuelsson, hinted that the second generation XC90 will get a (second) facelift after the first refresh work was carried out in 2019. Volvo does not need a facelift if the third generation XC90 is to enter production.
According to Samuelsson, they hope to update the second generation XC90 to make it visually better. He also mentioned that there is an increasing demand for hybrid models, and the trend is increasing especially in China as well as in America.
2024 Volvo XC90 EV
In June 2020, there were reports of Volvo offering the 2024 Volvo XC90 in T plug-in hybrid and B mild hybrid variants. The new lineup will be no different from what is on offer today. To increase traction, Volvo might give an exterior update to the current model so that there will be a classic alternative to the new (flagship) electric vehicle.
After all, the company plans to discontinue its combustion vehicles by 2030, so it makes sense that they should focus on EVs – and make sure they are ready for it.
Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, especially with longer mileage and shorter charging times. Add in the fact that more public charging stations are available than ever, and you have a recipe for success.

The novelty of the PHEV T8 powertrain gives the new XC90 luxury SUV an edge over other plug-in hybrids. This SUV has a larger battery which means it can go up to 36 miles on electricity.
Unfortunately, if you’re draining the battery, the PHEV setup can’t use DC fast chargers and requires a slower connection. This is great for charging at home but not at public stations.
2024 Volvo XC90 Release Date
It is possible that Volvo Cars will reveal their new Volvo CX90 later this year; at least before 2022 ends. While it is very likely that they could launch it in the US as a 2023 model, it is possible that it will eventually be set as a 2024 model.
In September 2017, the company had stated that it would manufacture this upcoming next-generation XC90 at their plant in South Carolina. Instead of using an alphanumeric name (as they do today with the XC90), they will give an entirely new name to the electric version of the XC90. It’s called the Volvo Embla.
The plant in South Carolina has confirmed that it will launch the next generation of Volvo electric vehicles. The details are still unclear, so we’ll have to wait for Volvo to confirm their Volvo XC90 2024.
2024 Volvo XC90 Price
Volvo XC90 2024 the combined output for this new powertrain setup increases by 55 horsepower to 455 and 51 lb-ft of torque to reach 523. The new electric motor credits this power boost. This motor produces 143 horsepower.
While the new XC90 Recharge offers a sprint to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the previous version, this powertrain will likely have a short life ahead of it.
