2025 Volvo XC60 is close to revealing its XC90 successor a vehicle that is expected to take on the new name Embla. The Swedish automaker will then seek to introduce a successor to its best-selling XC60 which Autocar reported on Wednesday to arrive sometime in 2024.
Like the successor to the XC90, the successor to the XC60 is expected to adopt a new name and offer a choice of internal combustion or electric engine. Autocar reports that the electric option will be available from 2025.
Interestingly the British publication also reports that the XC60 successor like the XC90 successor will take a more wagon-like form as first previewed by the 2021 Concept Recharge.
Supporting the XC60 successor will likely be Volvo’s next-generation SPA2 platform that debuted in the XC90 successor and will also support the associated Polestar 3. According to Volvo the platform has been designed from the start for a dedicated EV but will be capable of supporting an internal combustion powertrain.
Only about 65% of Volvo’s sales in 2021 will be EVs so the automaker isn’t ready to give up internal combustion power just yet. It aims to make EVs account for 50% of its sales by 2025 and 100% by 2030.

Volvo is transitioning to an all-electric lineup in 2030 and the successor to the all-electric XC60 will be the next step on that path. The crossover EV will use battery cells developed through a joint venture with Swedish battery company Northvolt.

Volvo says the Northvolt facility’s proximity to its European plant helps reduce the environmental impact associated with battery production. The automaker had previously stated half of its sales would come from all-electric models by 2025 with the remainder being petrol-electric hybrids.
The Polestar brand has its own ambitious goal: to build a truly climate-neutral vehicle by 2030.
The 50/50 Volvo and Northvolt joint venture will begin with the establishment of a Swedish research and development center in 2022. The company says it will reveal more details of its roadmap at the Volvo Cars Tech Moment on June 30, 2021.

2025 Volvo XC60 Specs
