2025 Volvo XC60: New Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Compact Sport Cars Review

2025 Volvo XC60 is close to revealing its XC90 successor a vehicle that is expected to take on the new name Embla. The Swedish automaker will then seek to introduce a successor to its best-selling XC60 which Autocar reported on Wednesday to arrive sometime in 2024.

Like the successor to the XC90, the successor to the XC60 is expected to adopt a new name and offer a choice of internal combustion or electric engine. Autocar reports that the electric option will be available from 2025.

Interestingly the British publication also reports that the XC60 successor like the XC90 successor will take a more wagon-like form as first previewed by the 2021 Concept Recharge.

Supporting the XC60 successor will likely be Volvo’s next-generation SPA2 platform that debuted in the XC90 successor and will also support the associated Polestar 3. According to Volvo the platform has been designed from the start for a dedicated EV but will be capable of supporting an internal combustion powertrain.

Only about 65% of Volvo’s sales in 2021 will be EVs so the automaker isn’t ready to give up internal combustion power just yet. It aims to make EVs account for 50% of its sales by 2025 and 100% by 2030.

2025 Volvo XC60 Review

Volvo is transitioning to an all-electric lineup in 2030 and the successor to the all-electric XC60 will be the next step on that path. The crossover EV will use battery cells developed through a joint venture with Swedish battery company Northvolt.

2025 Volvo XC60

While the two companies will open a new gigafactory in Europe and start production in 2026, Volvo will supply battery cells from Northvolt Ett’s plant in Sweden from 2024. That suggests the production of the next-generation XC60 will also start in 2024.

Volvo will supply 15-gigawatt hours of battery cells from the existing plant while the new gigafactory – location to be announced – will have a potential capacity of 50GWh per year and use 100 percent clean energy.

“By working with Northvolt we will secure a higher quality and more sustainable supply of battery cells for our pure electric cars,” said Håkan Samuelsson chief executive at the Volvo Car Group.

Volvo says the Northvolt facility’s proximity to its European plant helps reduce the environmental impact associated with battery production. The automaker had previously stated half of its sales would come from all-electric models by 2025 with the remainder being petrol-electric hybrids.

The Polestar brand has its own ambitious goal: to build a truly climate-neutral vehicle by 2030.

The 50/50 Volvo and Northvolt joint venture will begin with the establishment of a Swedish research and development center in 2022. The company says it will reveal more details of its roadmap at the Volvo Cars Tech Moment on June 30, 2021.

Northvolt has received investment from companies such as BMW and the Volkswagen Group. Volvo’s announcement indicates that there will be no internal combustion engine-powered model in the next-generation XC60 lineup.

2025 Volvo XC60 Specs

The electric successor to the Volvo XC60 and the electric alternative XC90 will be part of Volvo Cars’ second generation EV. Compared to XC40 Recharge or C40 Recharge they will have better lithium-ion battery technology.

The company aims for a 50% higher energy density for the battery cells it plans to co-develop with Northvolt. By mid-decade Volvo Cars plans to introduce a third-generation electric car and cut charging times by almost half.

Third-generation EVs can offer a driving range of up to 1,000 km or 621 miles.

2025 Volvo XC60 Report

In March 2021 Volvo Cars announced that it plans to have seven electric cars by the middle of the decade as it seeks to remove combustion engines from its lineup by the end of the decade. The announcement comes on the back of the launch of the first all-electric Volvo C40. One of the seven EVs will be the successor to the Volvo XC60.

On June 21, 2021, Volvo Cars’ parent company Volvo Car Group inserted confirmation of the electric successor to the Volvo XC60 in a press announcement. The company said it wants to form a joint venture with leading Swedish battery company Northvolt to develop and manufacture batteries for the next-generation Volvo and Polestar EVs.

Further in the announcement, the company said that the first model to feature a battery cell developed by the joint venture will be the electric successor to the Volvo XC60. The Volvo Car Group plans to have up to 50 GWh of annual production capacity in Europe with a joint venture in Europe by 2026.

On July 20, 2022, Jim Rowan President and CEO of Volvo Cars reaffirmed the existence of an electric successor to the XC60 in the product line. The electric successor XC60 and electric successor XC90 will play a key role in Volvo’s plans to make EVs account for half of the total sales.

The Volvo Car Group indicated in its June 2021 announcement that the pure electric counterpart of the XC60 would debut under a different name instead of “Volvo XC60 Electric.” The company is adopting a new nomenclature with rival Tesla’s upcoming Model X (previewed by Volvo Recharge Concept) choosing not to call it the XC90 EV.

2025 Volvo XC60 Exterior

The electric successor to the Volvo XC60 could feature a new kind of design inspired by the much larger Volvo Refill Concept and its production version that will debut in Q4 2022. For improved aerodynamics, this model could be lower and more SUV-like looking than the XC60.

Each next-generation Volvo EV will run on the company’s operating system called Volvo Cars.OS is an umbrella of multiple operating systems across cars and the cloud.

Android Automotive OS that supports the infotainment system will be part of Volvo Cars. OS. Customers will be able to use the connected car functionality available on every Volvo model using the same mobile app.

2025 Volvo XC60 Interior

The electric equivalent of the Volvo XC60 will pack a completely new infotainment platform based on Android. At the Volvo Cars Tech Moment Sanela Ibrovic Head of Connected Experience Volvo Cars shared the following highlights from the new infotainment platform:

  • Large center touch screen high-resolution driver information system
  • Optional heads-up display
  • Simple user interface
  • Easy to view information
  • Responsive interaction

2025 Volvo XC60 Tech

The technology available in the next-generation Volvo EV will include haptic seatbelt spatial audio and driver monitoring cameras as well. Most of the next-generation Volvo EV configurations will likely be hardware-ready for many high-end features like Luminar LiDAR-enabled autonomous driving for example.

Customers will be able to activate and use features they didn’t pay for at the time of purchase or lease later by paying later.

2025 Volvo XC60 Electric

The XC60 electric alternative will use the new SPA2 (Scalable Platform Architecture) currently under development.

An important advantage of the SPA2 versus the SPA1 is that Volvo will make a different floor assembly: the Volvo XC60 electric successor and the XC90 electric successor for example will have a flat floor like a skateboard with provisions to mount a flat battery and electric motor. for the front and back.

Meanwhile, the current XC60 is expected to live on well into the second half of the decade with periodic updates in a partially electrified variant. Volvo will not stop producing the XC60 hybrid as demand for the Refill variant is increasing every year and the elimination of the combustion variant will be gradual.

2025 Volvo XC60 Performance

Henrik Green Head of Global Advanced Technology & Sustainability Volvo Cars has suggested that the electric successor to the XC60 could come with a dual-motor powertrain producing up to 400 kW (536 hp) of system power.

2025 Volvo XC60

Speaking to Recharge (mestmotor.se) in December 2021 Green said that the next-generation Volvo EV coming from this year (2022) “will receive 400 kW (536 hp).”

Lutz Stiegler Solution Manager Electric Propulsion Volvo Cars confirmed at the Volvo Cars Tech Moment in June 2021 that the second-generation Volvo EV will have a charging power of over 200 kW.

The reduced internal resistance of the battery cells, improved thermal management and the customized design of the entire high-voltage system will allow the company to increase charging power to these levels, Stiegler said. This will greatly reduce the waiting time at the charging station.

2025 Volvo XC60 Release Date

Volvo could also continue to sell the current XC60 alongside its successor for several years, especially in markets where EV sales remain low. The automaker plans to do the same with the current XC90 which will remain on sale for some time after its successor arrives.

The XC60 is currently arriving for the 2018 model year and is being given a mild update for 2022. Volvo managed 41,582 sales in the US in 2021 which is the best result record for the nameplate.

According to reports from Autocar, the electric successor to the Volvo XC60 will arrive in 2025. Volvo Cars will only offer this model online. The list of competitors will include the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes EQC, the next generation Audi Q4, E-Tron, BMW iX3, and Lexus RZ.

By 2025 Volvo Cars target half of its sales to come from pure electric vehicles. By 2030 the company sees itself dealing exclusively with fully electric vehicles. If that were to happen the Swedish automaker would be one of the first legacy companies to switch completely to pure electric vehicles.
